Whoever Believes

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. (John 3:16 NKJV)

Today's meditation:
  •  "Men's courses will foreshadow certain ends, to which, if persevered in, they must lead," said Scrooge. "But if the courses be departed from, the ends will change" (Dickens, A Christmas Carol). As we stand on the threshold of the New Year, perhaps these words will not only motivate changes within ourselves, but also encourage us to help others to change.
Pray today:
  • For us to never lose sight of God's intended outcome for Christmas - that men and women everywhere will come to know the Savior, Jesus Christ.
Pray for the top three needs of Emmanuel College:
  • To hear the Word of the Lord regarding life after debt and our vision for an expanded mission for 2019 and beyond.
  • To enroll more than 1000 students in August 2019.
  • To continue reducing our debt over the next five years with the purpose of becoming debt-free.
Pray for upcoming events and activities:.
  • Spring Semester enrollment in January 2019 to exceed expectations because of better retention and larger numbers of new students, and for a total enrollment of 900 or more.
  • New Beginnings Spiritual Emphasis, January 10-13, 2019.
  • Scholars' Day recruiting events on campus in February 2019.
  • Spring Preview recruiting event on campus, March 22-24, 2019.
  • EC Serve trips for 2019 in the planning stages to Alaska, Appalachia, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Myanmar, and Panama.
  • For special projects to begin in 2019 to construct and remodel facilities debt-free, including improvements to Wellons Residence Hall, construction of the Collins agricultural teaching/lab building, obtaining lead gifts to expand the dining hall and improve academic facilities, and for wisdom in fundraising, planning, and implementation.

Shepherd My People

And you, O Bethlehem in the land of Judah, are not least among the ruling cities of Judah, for a ruler will come from you who will shepherd my people Israel. (Matthew 2:6 NLT)

Today's meditation:
  • A ruler who is like a shepherd? How different. How refreshing. A leader who provides, guides, protects, nurtures, loves and more. May all leaders be so. But more importantly, may we have the good sense to be the sheep of his pasture and to let him lead us.
Pray today:
  • For the people of Emmanuel College to humbly bow before the Lord Jesus, for us to hear and obey his voice, for us to follow him wherever he leads us.
Pray for the top three needs of Emmanuel College:
  • To hear the Word of the Lord regarding life after debt and our vision for an expanded mission for 2019 and beyond.

Come, Lord Jesus

He who testifies to these things says, "Yes, I am coming soon." Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. The grace of the Lord Jesus be with God's people. Amen. (Revelation 22:20-21 NIV)

Today's meditation:
  • We have just celebrated the first coming of Jesus to earth. Some are still celebrating. Others will celebrate from Advent to Epiphany, 40 days. According to tradition, Epiphany is when the Magi finally saw the Christ child. And the significance is that gentiles were included in the birth story through the Magi. And at the second coming of Jesus, gentiles will still be included.
Pray today:
  • For us to live our lives in anticipation of God's grace extended to us in our churches, in our families, in our work, in our schools.
  • For us to live in anticipation of our Lord's return, for us not to settle for Canaan when the Promised Land is in view.
  • For us to build stability and strength into Emmanuel College, but always for the purpose of making Christ-followers who, in turn, make more disciples generation after generation until Jesus comes again.

The Right Way

". . . and will bring those who are not obeying God back to the right way of thinking, to make a people ready for the coming of the Lord."(Luke 1:17b NCV)

Today's meditation:
  • Revival. Renewal. Redemption. These come when people change their way of thinking and hunger after God more than anything else.
Pray today:
  • For revival on our campus, for the spiritually withered and weak to be restored and rejuvenated.
  • For renewal on our campus, for believers to be energized by the Holy Spirit to live and proclaim the Gospel.
  • For redemption on our campus, for the lost to see Jesus in the lives of the Christians around them and to exchange their sins for his righteousness.
Pray for upcoming events and activities:.
  • Spring Semester enrollment in January 2019 to exceed expectations because of better retention and larger numbers of new students, and for a total enrollment of 900 or more.

Their Treasures

And behold, the star which they had seen in the East went before them, till it came and stood over where the young Child was . . . And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.  (Matthew 2:9, 11 NKJV)

Today's meditation:
  • There is so much we know, but so little that we do. The Magi knew what God was up to. They didn't sit around and say, "That's nice." They took action. They made an arduous journey through inhospitable lands and gave sacrificial gifts: gold to honor his royalty and deity, frankincense to reveal his position as high priest, and myrrh to signify his place as the only Sacrifice and Savior for the world. And they knelt down and worshiped him! Very wise men.
Pray today:
  • For the people of God to open the treasury of our souls and give of ourselves in word and deed, to offer encouragement and to share the Gospel, to commit acts of kindness and to serve others.
  • For the people of Emmanuel College to see beyond the routines of our daily lives all the way to our mission: to be a Christ-centered people, to make Christlike disciples of our students, and to help them engage their faith in God in their learning and their living - now and for the rest of their lives.

Astonished

After seeing him, the shepherds told everyone what had happened and what the angel had said to them about this child. All who heard the shepherds' story were astonished. (Luke 2:17-18 NLT)

Today's meditation:
  • What have we shared since last Christmas? Comfort? Joy? What are we giving this Christmas season? Peace? Hope? The most important question? What will we say and do about the angel's remarkable message, and who will we tell before another Christmas comes around?
  • "I will honor Christmas in my heart and try to keep it all the year. I will live in the past, the present, and the future . . . I will not shut out the lessons that they teach." (Ebenezer Scrooge upon his reclamation, from A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens)
Pray today:
  • For the people of God to throw off the malaise that infects so many, for us to resist going through the motions of what it means to be a Christian, and instead, for us to become genuine Christ-followers - not mere imitations, but living, breathing examples of what happens when Jesus lives in us.
Pray for the top three needs of Emmanuel College:
  • To hear the Word of the Lord regarding life after debt and our vision for an expanded mission for 2019 and beyond.
  • To enroll more than 1000 students in August 2019.

In a Manger

She gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him snugly in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no lodging available for them. (Luke 2:7 NLT)

Today's meditation:

Away in a manger, no crib for his bed,
The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head;
The stars in the sky look down where he lay,
The little Lord Jesus, asleep on the hay.

Give Praise Today:

Yea, Lord, we greet Thee, born this happy morning,
Jesus, to Thee be all glory given;
Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing!
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord!

Then the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord." (Luke 2:10-11 NKJV)

Merry Christmas!

The Time Came

And while they were there, the time came for her baby to be born. (Luke 2:6 NLT)

Today's meditation:
  • For it is good to be children sometimes, and never better than at Christmas, when its mighty Founder was a child himself. (Charles Dickens, from A Christmas Carol)
Pray today:
  • For people to pause this Christmas Eve and consider the miracle of Jesus' birth.
But Mary kept all these things in her heart and thought about them often. (Luke 2:19 NLT)

Firstborn

He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation . . . All things were created through Him and for Him . . . And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead . . . having made peace through the blood of His cross. (Colossians 1:15-19 NKJV)

Then Joseph . . . took to him his wife, and did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name Jesus. (Matthew 1:24-25 NKJV)

Today's meditation:
  • Jesus. Firstborn over all creation. Firstborn from the dead. Firstborn of Mary from Nazareth. Be sure to see the broad scope of God's plan this Christmas, not just the baby in Bethlehem, but eternal God clothed in flesh, the lamb slain from the foundation of the world, who by his death and resurrection reconciles mankind to himself and gives us peace.
Pray today:
  • For the people who celebrate Christmas but fail to consider its deeper meaning, for those who give and receive gifts yet neglect the greatest Gift, for the ones who yearn for relief from inner turmoil to see Jesus and accept the peace he offers.
  • For the people of Emmanuel College to declare the image of the invisible God, none other than Jesus, firstborn of Mary, for us to help others see the Savior at Christmastime and all through the year.
Pray for the top three needs of Emmanuel College:
  • To hear the Word of the Lord regarding life after debt and our vision for an expanded mission for 2019 and beyond.

Prince of Peace

And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6 NIV)

And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, "Peace, be still!" And the wind ceased and there was a great calm. (Mark 4:39 NKJV)

Today's meditation:
  • He who can control the uncontrollable with mere words is the Prince of Peace, unflappable, steady, calm in the storm, in the face of death, in the wake of victory, and in the soul of mankind. Why do we insist on making Christmas stressful when the One we honor at Christmas came to bring peace? Peace - ours for the asking, so ask!
Pray today:
  • For the people who struggle with stress at Christmastime to hear Jesus speaking peace to them, for the ones who feel depressed or anxious or hopeless to turn to Jesus for healing, for the One born Prince of Peace to be allowed into our lives as peacemaker.
  • For the people of Emmanuel College to be steady and calm whether the waters of life are placid or turbulent, to reveal the peace of Jesus in us in every circumstance we navigate.
Pray for the top three needs of Emmanuel College:
  • To hear the Word of the Lord regarding life after debt and our vision for an expanded mission for 2019 and beyond.
  • To enroll more than 1000 students in August 2019.

Everlasting Father

And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, the Everlasting Father . . . (Isaiah 9:6 NIV)

John announced: "Someone is coming soon who is greater than I am - so much greater that I'm not even worthy to stoop down like a slave and untie the straps of his sandals. I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." (Mark 1:7-8 NLT)

Today's meditation:
  • His deity? Profound, but true. Everlasting? Hard to comprehend as in since before there was time, and after time shall be no more. But Father? We know father. He wants us to know him as our Father - the kind that will do anything for his children, even die for them.
Pray today:
  • For the Emmanuel College family to be devoted sons and daughters of our Father, to serve by following the example of Jesus, and to work in the power of the Holy Spirit.
  • For us to be enabled by the Holy Spirit to envision, lead, and achieve God's plan, for us to teach, nurture, and guide our students, for us to recruit, enroll, and graduate leaders and workers, generation upon generation.

Mighty God

And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God . . . (Isaiah 9:6 NIV)

For with God nothing shall be impossible. (Luke 1:37 KJV)

Today's meditation:
  • He has shown himself to us, the Emmanuel College family, as Mighty God, for whom nothing is too great a threat. He speaks and the words on his breath vanquish opposing forces. Mighty God! Yes, and amen!
Pray today:
  • For threats to Christian higher education to be ineffective, for no opposing force to be able to muzzle the Word of Truth emanating from Christian colleges, for religious liberties in the United State to be protected and preserved, for Emmanuel College to be able to continue educating men and women within a Christian worldview.
Pray for the top three needs of Emmanuel College:
  • To hear the Word of the Lord regarding life after debt and our vision for an expanded mission for 2019 and beyond.
  • To enroll more than 1000 students in August 2019.

Wonderful Counselor

For unto us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor. . . (Isaiah 9:6 NIV)

Today's meditation:
  • If the evidence is stacked against us, good legal counsel is needed if we hope to be exonerated. However, the human race is guilty, that is, until the Wonderful Counselor came along offering to expunge our records with his own blood. Too wonderful for words!
Pray today:
  • For the words of Jesus to advise and lead us in everything we do:
    • love God and love your neighbor
    • have everlasting life and life more abundant
    • give and forgive
    • go and sin no more
    • go and do likewise; serve the least of these
    • go into all the world and share the Gospel.
Pray for the top three needs of Emmanuel College:
  • To hear the Word of the Lord regarding life after debt and our vision for an expanded mission for 2019 and beyond.
  • To enroll more than 1000 students in August 2019.

Rahab and Ruth

To a virgin named Mary. She was engaged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of King David. (Luke 1 27 NLT)

Salmon was the father of Boaz (whose mother was Rahab). Boaz was the father of Obed (whose mother was Ruth). (Matthew 1:5 NLT)

Today's meditation:
  • There they are. Two gentile women named in the same verse in the family tree of David and Jesus. One righteous and faithful to her mother-in-law, pledging that "your God will be my God". The other a prostitute who courageously proclaimed, "the Lord your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath." Both outside the family of God, but both grafted into the lineage of the Savior - a clear message that we, too, can be included.
Pray today:
  • For the people of Emmanuel College to be both faithful and courageous, for faithfulness in following wherever he leads, for courage to stand and proclaim the Lord our God, ruler of  the universe and Savior of the world.
Pray for the top three needs of Emmanuel College:
  • To hear the Word of the Lord regarding life after debt and our vision for an expanded mission for 2019 and beyond.

Immanuel

All right then, the Lord himself will give you the sign. Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel (which means "God is with us.") (Isaiah 7:14 NLT)

In the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a village in Galilee, to a virgin name Mary . . . Gabriel appeared to her and said, "Greetings, favored woman! The Lord is with you!" (Luke 1:26-28 NLT)

Today's meditation:
  • Isaiah prophesied about an obscure virgin. To us, she has a name - Mary. But the purpose of it all was to bring God close so he could be with us, really with us, up close and personal, living in us. Hallelujah! The Lord is come! Emmanuel - our God with us!
Pray today:
  • For the leadership of Emmanuel College, the Board of Trustees and administration, to draw close to our God who is with us, to understand his every wish and desire for the College, and to follow him precisely and obey him completely.
Pray for the top three needs of Emmanuel College:
  • To hear the Word of the Lord regarding life after debt and our vision for an expanded mission for 2019 and beyond.

Great Things

"For the Mighty One has done great things for me - holy is his name." (Luke 1:49 NIV)

Today's meditation:
  • Count your blessings this Christmas! Regardless of your personal circumstances, the greatest blessing is to know Jesus and to submit to his plan. Mary did. Despite the challenges she faced, the world became a better place because of her obedience.
Pray today:
  • For all who love Emmanuel College to rejoice this Christmas over the great things God has done for us this year, for us to joyfully submit to his plan for Emmanuel in the year to come and the ones that follow, for the world to become a better place because of our obedience.
Pray for the top three needs of Emmanuel College:
  • To hear the Word of the Lord regarding life after debt and our vision for an expanded mission for 2019 and beyond.

Liberty to the Captives

"He has sent me . . . to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed." (Luke 4:18b NKJV)

Today's meditation:
  • Not everyone sees the Christ of Christmas. Many are blind to his presence and his purpose. They are chained in prisons of desperation - debt, dead-end job, no job, stress, depression. Christians must share the Good News of Jesus' coming and his redemptive work in the earth to set captives free, especially during this joyful season.
Pray today:
  • For believers to be alert and notice the captives and oppressed all around us, for us to speak words of hope and redemption to them through the Christmas story of the baby born in Bethlehem.
  • For those who need to see Jesus to be receptive to the promptings of the Holy Spirit, whether it's at a children's Christmas play or in their cars listening to carols or at a roadside nativity scene or in any of a thousand ways we are reminded at Christmas of the One who came to save us.

Heal the Brokenhearted

"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted." (Luke 4:18a NKJV)

Today's meditation:
  • Not everyone feels joy at Christmas. For some it is a difficult time of lack and brokenness. For others it is a time of greed and consumption. As Marley's ghost observed, "Mankind was my business. The common welfare was my business; charity, mercy, forbearance, and benevolence were all my business. The dealings of my trade were but a drop of water in the comprehensive ocean of my business!" (From A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens)
Pray today:
  • For believers to be generous this Christmas and help the needy, for churches to lead benevolent missions in their communities and around the world, for organizations that help the needy at Christmas to be blessed with abundance to share.
  • For any of our students who may have financial needs at this time, for financial help and blessings to come to them, for those who may be experiencing emotional distress to find help and comfort.
  • For any of our employees who may be struggling to make ends meet, for them to find provision and help in their time of need, for those who may feel loss and hurt to find peace and joy.
Pray for the top three needs of Emmanuel College:
  • To hear the Word of the Lord regarding life after debt and our vision for an expanded mission for 2019 and beyond.
  • To enroll more than 1000 students in August 2019.

Thanks to God

To those who are pure, all things are pure, but to those who are full of sin and do not believe, nothing is pure. (Titus 1:15 NCV)

Those who think one day is more important than other days are doing that for the Lord. And those who eat all kinds of food are doing that for the Lord, and they give thanks to God. Others who refuse to eat some foods do that for the Lord, and they give thanks to God. (Romans 14:6 NCV)

Today's meditation:
  • Much has become attached to Christmas that is not part of the original story, and worse, can often detract. Santa, elves, Rudolf, to name a few. Rather than argue over myths and fiction, maybe we should use them to point back to Jesus. After all, stories of Santa can teach lessons about selflessness, elves about service, and Rudolf about persecution and persistence. In a sense, believers can help sanctify some of the fiction, and at the end of the story, point to the Savior and to the Gospel much like Jesus did with parables.
Pray today:
  • For believers during this Christmas season to keep Christ the focus of the season amid all the festivities and storytelling, for us to tell the most important story of all about a loving God who teaches us by his own example how to give to make a difference in the world.
  • For the people of Emmanuel College to celebrate and give thanks to God this season and throughout the year, for us to give, serve, and persist despite difficulties and even persecution.
  • For Emmanuel to be a college true to its name - God with us.
Pray for the top three needs of Emmanuel College:
  • To hear the Word of the Lord regarding life after debt and our vision for an expanded mission for 2019 and beyond.
  • To enroll more than 1000 students in August 2019.

Angels

The reward for trusting him will be the salvation of your souls. This salvation was something even the prophets wanted to know more about. They wondered . . . And now this Good News has been announced to you . . . It is all so wonderful that even the angels are eagerly watching these things happen. (1 Peter 1: 9-12 NLT)

Today's meditation:
  • Angels. We seldom give them a thought. We relegate them to Bible stories. Some of us have an angel atop the Christmas tree this season. How appropriate! An angel spoke to Mary, to Zechariah, and to Joseph. A multitude of angels appeared to the shepherds. Somehow angels intertwine their lives with ours. They celebrate and wonder. Most of all, they marvel at the amazing work of Jesus who started in a manger and finished on a cross - to save the lost and bring them home.
Pray today:
  • For the lost wherever they may be - in our communities, in our places of work, in our churches, in our families, in our colleges.
  • For all people to see the Christ of Christmas, for believers to see him and rejoice and to share the Good News, for unbelievers to see him and repent and receive the Good News.

My Father's Business

"Did you not know that I must be about My Father's business?" (Luke 2:49 NKJV)

Today's meditation:
  • With heartfelt compassion we think of families separated at Christmas - troops deployed in foreign lands, or worse, in war zones, missionaries who serve in cultures unlike their own, patients in hospitals and their caregivers, first-responders on duty, others who miss family gatherings because of work. And then there was Jesus whose tour of duty lasted over 30 years, separated from all that was familiar and from his Father. May God be close to those who are away from family this Christmas.
Pray today:
  • For those in the Emmanuel family of students, staff and faculty who may be away from home this Christmas, for comfort and cheer to come to them, and most of all, for them to feel Jesus near.
  • For those who must serve God, country, or their fellowman this Christmas, for those who are ill and those who must care for them, for those who for whatever reason cannot be with family this Christmas - may all of them find peace and comfort through Jesus.

Family

So Joseph [and Mary] left Nazareth, a town in Galilee, and went to the town of Bethlehem in Judea, known as the town of David. Joseph went there because he was from the family of David. (Luke 2:4 NCV)

Today's meditation:
  • Many people travel during the Christmas season. Some jet across the country. Others drive a few miles. Joseph and Mary were the first to do Christmas travel. Their 90-mile journey by foot and by donkey would be like driving from coast to coast today, at least 3 days. Why do we do it? To be with family. Joseph with his father's family of David. Others of us gather with our mother's family. But no one has ever traveled farther at Christmas to be with family than Jesus.
Pray today:
  • For safe travels for our students, some of whom will jet across the world to other continents.
  • For our faculty and staff who travel during Christmas.
  • For the Emmanuel family to enjoy the Christmas season, safe and peaceful, and to gather again in January for a New Year filled with hope and opportunities.

Love

Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. (Matthew 22:39 KJV)

So now faith, hope and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love. (1 Corinthians 13:13 ESV)

Today's meditation:
  • "But I am sure I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round, as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time; the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely." (words of Scrooge's nephew from A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens).
Pray today:
  • For love to motivate our ministries - love for God, love for others, and love for the family of God.
  • For love for the younger generations who desperately need what Jesus has to offer, for love in our churches and colleges to draw them to Jesus, for Jesus' love to flow through the Emmanuel College family healing the hurt and pain of those who need him wherever we find them.
Pray for the top three needs of Emmanuel College:
  • To hear the Word of the Lord regarding life after debt and our vision for an expanded mission for 2018 and beyond.
  • To enroll more than 1000 students in August 2019.
  • To continue reducing our debt over the next five years with the purpose of becoming debt-free.

No Room

There was no room for them in the inn. (Luke 2:7 KJV)

Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me. (Matthew 28:40 NIV)

Today's meditation:
  • One of the best things about Christmas is how compassionate and charitable people can be in helping those less fortunate. In an overcrowded Bethlehem, someone saw Joseph's need and provided shelter. Just a stable, but so much better than being helpless and exposed in the streets. Gifts of compassion to those in need, whether great or small, are gifts offered to Jesus.
Pray today:
  • For a greater awareness of those who need our help, for energy and resources to meet needs at Christmas time and all through the year.
  • For the ministry of EC Serve to attract more participants eager to serve others, for EC Serve to be effective in meeting needs, for the EC Serve mission trips being planned for 2019 to Alaska, Appalachia, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Myanmar, and Panama.
Pray for upcoming events and activities:.
  • Spring Semester enrollment in January 2019 to exceed expectations because of better retention, larger numbers of new students, and a total enrollment of 900 or more.

Gifts

Then they opened their treasure chests and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. (Matthew 2:11 NLT)

Today's meditation:
  • American culture has turned Christmas into a commercial frenzy of selling and buying gifts, but it is rooted in something good - very good. The gift of the Christ child, the giver of life. We give gifts to each other, but the wise men gave gifts to Jesus. Perhaps we should consider the same. What gift can I give him this Christmas?
Pray today:
  • For a desire so deep that we ache for it, a desire to give ourselves to God with complete abandon, melding our hopes and dreams with his divine purpose.
  • For the students of Emmanuel College to see the world through God's eyes - hurt and loss, hope and provision - and to give themselves to make a difference, some to full-time callings, others to a life of service in the career they've chosen, but all servants of the Lord Jesus.

Bread of Life

"How my spirit rejoices in God my Savior . . . he has done great things for me . . . he has filled the hungry with good things." (Luke 1:47, 49, 53 NLT)

Jesus said, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty." (John 6:35 NLT)

Today's meditation:
  • Food is central to Christmas celebrations whether office parties, church dinners, or family gatherings. Turkeys and hams. Cakes and pies. Candies and cookies. Oh, that we would feed on Jesus and his Word as hungrily as we consume a Christmas feast.
Pray today:
  • For a hunger for God across our campus in the New Year, for it to begin now and continue throughout the Christmas season as we seek the Bread of Life himself, for the Holy Spirit to lead us in our quest to know Jesus better and to fill our hungry souls with good things.

His Star

Some wise men from eastern lands arrived in Jerusalem, asking, "Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star as it rose, and we have come to worship him."

And the star they had seen in the east guided them to Bethlehem. It went ahead of them and stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were filled with joy! (Matthew 2:1-2, 9-10 NLT)

Today's meditation:
  • The first Christmas light was a star in the heavens. Bright. Twinkling. Meaningful. May Christmas lights bring meaning to the season, reminding us of Jesus, the Light of the world.
Pray today:
  • For clarity and vision to see the path that God illuminates for Emmanuel College, for our leadership team, the staff and faculty, and our current and future students to see the Light who leads.
Pray for the top three needs of Emmanuel College:
  • To hear the Word of the Lord regarding life after debt and our vision for an expanded mission for 2018 and beyond.
  • To enroll more than 1000 students in August 2019.

On a Tree

Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us - for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree" - so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith. (Galatians 3:13-14 ESV)

Today's meditation:
  • Ornaments and lights on dead or artificial trees are beautiful. Each Christmas tree should remind us of the beautiful lives, once dead, now born again because of Jesus' red blood that stained a dead tree. Red reminds us of his blood. Green - the new life that it nourishes. Silver and gold - the royalty and glory of the King of Kings and the inheritance of his sons and daughters. And each tree points heavenward, reminding us that Jesus is coming again - for us.
Pray today:
  • For constant reminders this Christmas season of what Jesus did for us on the cross, for the people of Emmanuel College to be emissaries of love and redemption with each "Merry Christmas" we utter, with each "oooh" and "aaah" we exclaim over lights and ornaments, and with each expression of joy and hope we offer.
Pray for the top three needs of Emmanuel College:
  • To hear the Word of the Lord regarding life after debt and our vision for an expanded mission for 2018 and beyond.
  • To enroll more than 1000 students in August 2019.

Singing God's Praises

At once the angel was joined by a huge angelic choir singing God's praises: Glory to God in the heavenly heights, peace to all men and women on earth who please him. (Luke 1:13-14 MSG)

Today's meditation:
  • Pay attention to the music this Christmas season. Even shopping can be a reminder of the reason for the season as the strains of "O Holy Night" or "Joy to the World" accompany us in stores, malls, offices, cars, airports - everywhere.
Pray today:
  • For the gift of Jesus and the salvation he brings to be our theme this Christmas, for Emmanuel College to proclaim at Christmas and throughout the year that Jesus is our Savior and Lord, for our students, staff, and faculty to sing praises to God, pointing others to the peace that comes from receiving Jesus.
Pray for the top three needs of Emmanuel College:
  • To hear the Word of the Lord regarding life after debt and our vision for an expanded mission for 2018 and beyond.

Son of God

The angel replied, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the baby to be born will be holy, and he will be called the Son of God." (Luke 1:35 NLT)

Today's meditation:
  • The coming of the Christ child into the world changed everything. If God gave so freely of himself to save the world, shouldn't we?
Pray today:
  • For our students to encounter the Babe of Bethlehem this Christmas season, for them to allow him to change them and empower them to give birth to kingdom life, shaping themselves in his image, transforming themselves mind, body, and spirit, and sharing themselves freely with those who are yet to know him.
Pray for the top three needs of Emmanuel College:
  • To hear the Word of the Lord regarding life after debt and our vision for an expanded mission for 2018 and beyond.

Wonders

And God confirmed the message by giving signs and wonders and various miracles and gifts of the Holy Spirit whenever he chose. (Hebrews 2:4 NLT)

Today's meditation:
  • God seeks people and places where he can show his power to change lives and shape the world. Thankful that Emmanuel College is one more place God has chosen to confirm his message in wondrous and miraculous ways.
Pray today:
  • For the miracles to continue at Emmanuel College, for faith to grow stronger, for courage to run deeper.
  • For the Gospel message to be confirmed in the lives of the redeemed - students, staff and faculty - through the gifts of the Holy Spirit and the wonders that follow.
Pray for the top three needs of Emmanuel College:
  • To hear the Word of the Lord regarding life after debt and our vision for an expanded mission for 2018 and beyond.
