Tremendous Power

Arise in Prayer - Day 21 of 21

Confess and acknowledge how you have offended one another and then pray for one another to be instantly healed, for tremendous power is released through the passionate, heartfelt prayer of a godly believer. (James 5:16 TPT)

Jesus asked a question once, "How can you remove the splinter from someone's eye when you have a log in your own?" In the verse above, the KJV uses the words "righteous man," and we translate it "Christian person," but maybe it means "a person living right with God" (MSG). That person's prayers are effective. Thinking of Jesus' question, it follows that the prayer of a self-righteous person, the one with the log in his or her eye, is ineffective. Logs come in various sizes and types but some of the most common are bitterness because of what someone did to us, festering wounds from broken relationships, hate and prejudice, self-righteous indignation, hypocrisy. James gives us the solution. Confess to one another. Ask forgiveness from others and from God. Then, our log-in-the-eye condition can be healed, and our prayers will have tremendous power.

Pray for yourself today with self-inspection. Pray for others, for those who have offended you, and those you may have offended.

Pray every Sunday for revival and renewal to saturate our campus this semester.

Pray daily for the few among our students and employees who have the corona virus. Pray for their healing and comfort. Pray for our COVID-19 Response Team that cares for students in quarantine and isolation. Pray for the eradication of this virus.

Prayer of Confession

Arise in Prayer - Day 20 of 21

So I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with him in prayer and petition, in fasting, and in sackcloth and ashes. I prayed to the Lord my God and confessed. (Daniel 9:3-4 NIV)

Fasting, sackcloth, and ashes tell us that Daniel is praying in a state of mourning. We prefer joyful prayers and praise, but sometimes we need to stop and confess in deep sorrow for our sins, the sins of our family, the sins of the church, the sins of the nations. Read Daniel's prayer (vs. 4-19) as an example of confessional prayer. Fasting indicates a seriousness in prayer that demonstrates that our need for God and his mercy is greater than our need for food. It is sobering to think of our thoughts, words, and behaviors compared to the holiness of Almighty God. It should bring us to our knees in humble submission begging for mercy and favor.

Pray confessional prayers today: We confess unholy attitudes and thoughts. We confess arrogance and pride in dealing with others. We confess that our sins are a reproach to the holiness of God and beg forgiveness. Cleanse and sanctify us as vessels for use in your kingdom.

Pray every Saturday for the preservation of religious freedoms throughout our nation. Pray that no law, regulation, or court case will impede Christian colleges and universities from maintaining scriptural standards.

Pray daily for the few among our students and employees who have the corona virus. Pray for their healing and comfort. Pray for our COVID-19 Response Team that cares for students in quarantine and isolation. Pray for the eradication of this virus.

Likewise at Evening

Arise in Prayer - Day 19 of 21

They are to stand every morning to thank and praise our God, and likewise at evening. (1 Chronicles 23:30 AMP)

Much has been said about morning prayers, but let's not miss the opportunities of the evening. Maybe at dinner recount some good thing that happened that day and give thanks. Or if the day was less than stellar, remember some past blessing and offer praise. After dinner, children scatter to do homework or play games. TVs are tuned to favorite shows or sports. Why not carve out 15 minutes to pray the scriptures or count your blessings or go on a prayer walk? Preparing for bedtime offers choice moments for prayer and praise. Prayers with children. Prayers with spouse. Intimate prayers and praise in the darkness as sleep comes. Yes, pray in the evening, too.

Pray for the successful continuation of this semester without interruption.

Pray every Friday for our faculty, staff, and senior leadership team.

Pray daily for the few among our students and employees who have the corona virus. Pray for their healing and comfort. Pray for our COVID-19 Response Team that cares for students in quarantine and isolation. Pray for the eradication of this virus.

Even When I Walk

Arise in Prayer - Day 18 of 21

The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need. He lets me rest in green meadows; he leads me beside peaceful streams. He renews my strength. He guides me along right paths, bringing honor to his name. Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. (Psalm 23:1-4 NLT)

The shepherd walks; the sheep follow. Imagine him speaking softly as he walks before you. He listens intently for any signs of distress or danger. Walking and talking, he leads you to provision and rest in fields, by streams, on good paths, and even in dark valleys. Try walking and praying with this image of the shepherd leading. Prayer walks get you out in God's creation. Maybe it's a simple walk in your neighborhood or around a track. Maybe it's hiking on a trail or in a park. Wherever you walk, pray. Walk and pray, for he is close beside you, listening and gently leading.

Pray for the future of Emmanuel College. Pray for more students to enroll this fall. Pray for our faculty and staff, especially for new hires to fill vacant positions next fall.

Pray every Thursday for clear vision and abundant resources to fulfill God's mission for Emmanuel College for 2021 and beyond.

He Already Knows

Arise in Prayer - Day 17 of 21

So don't worry about these things, saying, "What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?" These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. Seek the kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. (Matthew 6:31-33 NLT)

Too many of our prayers are about asking. Yes, we are encouraged to ask in order to receive, but our prayers should be balanced with expressions of love, honor, thanksgiving, praise, and simply being in his presence. And the things we need? Jesus says that unbelievers worry about this stuff, but that we shouldn't because our Father already knows what we need. Loving parents provide what their children need. So it is with our heavenly Father. He is not cruel or stingy. Have confidence that he already knows, and in his timing, we will receive.

Seeking the kingdom includes praying for others - the lost, the less fortunate, the discouraged, the sick; kingdom leaders and workers; our families, our friends, our co-workers; our churches, our schools, our colleges; our communities, our states, our nation, to name a few.

Pray every Wednesday for wisdom and common sense to prevail on our campus, throughout our communities and cities, and across our nation.

Pray daily for the few among our students and employees who have the corona virus. Pray for their healing and comfort. Pray for our COVID-19 Response Team that cares for students in quarantine and isolation. Pray for the eradication of this virus.

Abiding

Arise in Prayer - Day 16 of 21

If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples. (John 15:7-8 NKJV)

John 15:8, "By this my Father is glorified." What is the "this" that glorifies the Father? Us abiding in him, his words abiding in us, and as a result, what the Father does in and for us. Abiding in him is more than casual acquaintance. It's a serious relationship. Then, there's God's Word abiding in us which is more than memorizing a few verses. God's Word in us is about obedience to what he tells us in his Word. When we abide like this, our desires align with God's and his answers to our requests reveal his power which bears fruit in our lives that glorify God. Note that fruit only ripens at the end of a lengthy growing season. This abiding is not casual; this is serious, in-depth devotion to and relationship with God. This only happens through prayer.

Pray for the people of God to become as serious about him as he is about us. May our prayers focus on him, his Word, and his will.

Pray every Tuesday for provision and protection for Emmanuel College during these perilous times. Pray for the leaders of Emmanuel College at every level to have strength and courage to do all the Lord commands us.

Praying at First Light

Arise in Prayer - Day 15 of 21

My voice You shall hear in the morning, O Lord; in the morning I will direct it to You, and I will look up. (Psalm 5:3 NKJV)

Two thoughts: (1) The Psalmist speaks to God each morning, and (2) he begins his day by looking up. Both are good advice for us. Your morning audience with the Lord could start with praise and thanksgiving, then move into worship, and then turn to petition for what you need that day. It doesn't necessarily take a lot of time, but it does take commitment. As for looking up, it is a positive posture that will help anyone face the world. But if our looking up signals our faith in God as our helper and guide, we face life's difficulties and challenges with confidence and hope. What a way to begin a day!

Pray for healing across our nation. Pray for reconciliation and forgiveness. Pray for peace. Pray that we are one nation under God.

Pray every Monday for our students to follow the Lord in their career choices and to permeate their lives with acts of Christian service.

God in our Midst

Arise in Prayer - Day 14 of 21

Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there in the midst of them. (Matthew 18:19-20 NKJV)

God in our midst. Wow! Stop and think about that! Many of us gather in our family room each Sunday to join a virtual service somewhere. You may only number two or three, but God is in your midst - communicating, listening, enjoying being with you. Even if you are by yourself today, when you gather with others virtually, God is in the midst of all of you, listening and responding to your worship and to your requests. In other words, your Father responds when you agree in prayer whether you are in a church sanctuary or sitting on your sofa, whether you are physically with others or virtually with them, whether with two hundred or just two.

Pray every Sunday for revival and renewal to saturate our campus this semester.

Prayers in the Night

Arise in Prayer - Day 13 of 21

One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God. (Luke 6:12 NIV)

Praying all night would be difficult for anyone, but praying through the night is an entirely different matter. Anyone can do it. Start by praying yourself to sleep. As you lie upon your bed waiting for sleep to come, pray for others by name. If you awaken in the night (for some of us it's when we wake up in the night), pick up where you left off or begin praying about the new day ahead. If worries are waking you up, pray about what worries you. And when morning comes, before you place your foot on the floor, pray the Lord's Prayer or Psalm 23 or just a few words of praise from the depths of your heart.

Pray for more of our students to be called to full-time Christian ministry. Pray for responsive hearts and minds to the call of Jesus Christ to a life of service.

Pray every Saturday for the preservation of religious freedoms throughout our nation. Pray that no law, regulation, or court case will impede Christian colleges and universities from maintaining scriptural standards.

Prayer Meetings

Arise in Prayer - Day 12 of 21

Peter and John went to the Temple one afternoon to take part in the three o'clock prayer service. (Acts 3:1 NLT)

Prayer meetings are powerful opportunities that are often neglected whether its a regular Wednesday evening prayer service or a prayer breakfast or some other time devoted to prayer. But let's be sure to pray more than we do other things. Why not organize a prayer time at lunch? Even in this pandemic world, you could arrange a prayer gathering using Zoom or other virtual technology with a few close friends and colleagues for 10-15 minutes. Hmmm. Friends and colleagues praying during the lunch hour. Interesting and effective concept, don't you think?

Pray more prayers for Emmanuel College. Pray for the final New Beginnings service tonight. Pray for our students.

Pray every Friday for our faculty, staff, and senior leadership team.

Help Us, O Lord

Arise in Prayer - Day 11 of 21

Make haste, O God, to deliver me! Make haste to help me, O Lord! (Psalm 70:1 NKJV)

Praying the scriptures is a powerful practice. Many of the psalms are prayers like the one above. Read Psalm 70 in its entirety. Read it slowly, phrase by phrase, thought by thought. Put yourself in place of the writer. Every "I" and "me" and "my" are you, or read it thinking of your family, your business, or your church. Maybe tomorrow try praying a psalm of praise like Psalm 66. Many New Testament passages work well like 1 Corinthians 13 and Philippians 4. Start praying the scriptures today.

Pray for help and deliverance for Emmanuel College. Pray for all Christian colleges to withstand the fury of a pagan world.

Pray every Thursday for clear vision and abundant resources to fulfill God's mission for Emmanuel College for 2021 and beyond.

Call upon the Lord

Arise in Prayer - Day 10 of 21

Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart. (Jeremiah 29:12-13 NKJV)

God promises to listen to us when we pray. Then, why don't we pray more? Do we really believe that he listens and responds to our prayers? The Apostle Paul put it this way, "He who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him" (Hebrews 11:6 NKJV). If you believe that, you will pray more, and you will seek the Lord with all your heart.

Pray for the New Beginnings spiritual emphasis on our campus this week. Pray for our campus community to call upon the Lord with all our hearts.

The Secret Place

Arise in Prayer - Day 9 of 21

But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut the door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. (Matthew 6:6 NKJV)

The Bible encourages us to be with others in corporate prayer, but it also places great importance on private prayer, just you and he in the secret place of relationship and conversation. Don't neglect it. Create time for it. Preserve and use that time each day for a deep and abiding communion with him. And note that he rewards those who spend time with him in private. Who couldn't use that?

Pray for the opening of the new semester that starts this week. Classes begin today. Pray for students, faculty, and staff. Pray for a safe and successful semester.

Praying for People

Arise in Prayer - Day 8 of 21

And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord's people. (Ephesians 6:18 NIV)

Maybe you are not a list maker, but consider creating a list of people you pray for. One way to do this is to use the notes function in your mobile phone to make a list of names. In this way, the list is always available to you wherever you go. When you have a few extra minutes, you can open your note that holds the list of people and pray for several of them. Of course, you can use it in a devotional time as well or in a church service or prayer meeting - anytime, anywhere, any kind of prayer.

Pray every Monday for our students to follow the Lord in their career choices and to permeate their lives with acts of Christian service.

In Every Place of Worship

Arise in Prayer - Day 7 of 21

In every place of worship, I want men to pray with holy hands lifted up to God, free from anger and controversy. (1 Timothy 2:8 NLT)

How much praying goes on in our church services? People are called upon to lead prayers, and what do the rest of us do? Most often, just listen. Some of us could up our prayer time simply by praying more in church. Follow the admonition of Paul to Timothy, lift up your hands and pray to God. Don't miss the opportunity to pray more in church, praying together, calling upon God as one body, intertwining our prayers like the strands of a strong cord, praising, worshiping, interceding, petitioning, requesting, submitting. Even if you are worshiping virtually, pray together when you worship.

Pray every Sunday for revival and renewal to saturate our campus this semester.

Present your Requests to God

Arise in Prayer - Day 6 of 21

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:6-7 NIV)

What worries you? What keeps you up at night? What disturbs your peace? Steals your joy? Pray about it. If it's important to you, it's important to our Lord, and he welcomes your call. Do our prayers matter? Yes. If for no other reason, they matter because God answers our prayers with his peace. Our prayers may not make a problem go away, but they certainly make us rest in the comfort of his sovereignty, enveloped in his peace and love no matter the circumstances surrounding us.

Pray every Saturday for the preservation of religious freedoms throughout our nation. Pray that no law, regulation, or court case will impede Christian colleges and universities from maintaining scriptural standards.

The Spirit Himself Makes Intercession

Arise in Prayer - Day 5 of 21

Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. (Romans 8:26 NKJV)

Let's face it. Sometimes we don't know what to pray. Some situations are so complex, so significant, so utterly baffling. Let the Holy Spirit pray through you. He knows your intents and motives. He understands your desires and passions. He interprets your groans and sighs. Despite your emotions or the uncertainty, the critical response is to be there in his presence, submitting to his sovereignty, yielding to his will, praying in the Spirit whether silent, groaning, or speaking in an unknown tongue. Do not give up. Do not quit the field of battle. Pray!

Pray every Friday for our faculty, staff, and senior leadership team.

Pray Continually

Arise in Prayer - Day 4 of 21

Pray without ceasing. (1 Thessalonians 5:17 NKJV)

How easy it is to dismiss the idea of praying without ceasing! But one way to do this is to pray when transitioning from one place to another or from one task to another. There is always a space between. Walking to the break room, going to the garage, walking to the parking lot or from your car to the store, moving to the laundry room or the kitchen or the bathroom, putting up a file or getting one. These moments are brief so always be ready to whisper a quick prayer for a person, for a problem, for a project. Pray without ceasing.

Pray every Thursday for clear vision and abundant resources to fulfill God's mission for Emmanuel College for 2021 and beyond.

Pray daily for the few among our students and employees who have the corona virus. Pray for their healing and comfort. Pray for the eradication of this virus.

Keep on Praying

Arise in Prayer - Day 3 of 21

Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying. (Romans 12:12 NLT)

How often do you wait in line for something? At the grocery store, the pharmacy, the restaurant. Quietly, without anyone around you knowing, and instead of complaining and fretting because the line is long, use that precious time to pray - for family members, for your pastor, for your church, for Emmanuel College, for whatever the Holy Spirit brings to your mind. Redeem lost and wasted time this year. Pray more.

Pray every Wednesday for wisdom and common sense to prevail on our campus, throughout our communities and cities, and across our nation.

Open to their Prayers

Day 2 of 21 days of prayer - Global IPHC Arise in Prayer Emphasis

For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayers. (1 Peter 3:12 NKJV)

If God's ears are open to our prayers, without qualification, with no appointment necessary, 24/7/365, then why not take advantage of minutes given to us nearly every day, minutes usually wasted in waiting for something. Instead, pray while waiting for your car to be serviced or while getting gas or waiting for the doctor or dentist or while on the phone waiting for customer service. During these 21 days of prayer, see waiting as a gift of time when we can pray. Form a new habit: praying while waiting.

Pray every Tuesday for provision and protection for Emmanuel College during these perilous times. Pray for the leaders of Emmanuel College at every level to have strength and courage to do all the Lord commands us.
