Out of Egypt

And they stayed there [in Egypt] until Herod's death. This fulfilled what the Lord had spoken through the prophet: "I called my son out of Egypt." (Matthew 2:15 NLT)

Today's meditation:

• Joseph, the son of Israel, settled his family in Egypt. Although Joshua did not lead them out of Egypt, he led them into the Promised Land - Israel. Another Joseph fled there with his wife and infant son, Jesus. But at the appropriate time, he led his family out of Egypt and back to Israel - the Promised Land. Just marvel for a moment on the significance of the names. Israel means "may God prevail." Joseph means "Jehovah gives increase." Joshua means "Jehovah saves" - even more startling when you realize that the name Joshua in Greek is Jesus.

Pray today:

• For the people of Emmanuel College to rejoice in being led out of the oppressive bondage of debt, for us to exalt in the prevailing power of our God to save and to open a way forward, for us to trust him to give increase and provision for what he calls us to do.

Today's meditation:

• I can't imagine that Joseph cared much for going to Egypt. He had already been thrust into the job of being a father to the Son of God. But now he is asked to leave everything familiar - family, town, country. And of all places, go to Egypt. To an Israelite, it is the symbol of bondage and idolatry. And yet, he obeyed. Once again, he obeyed. Obedience in the hard places is the true measure of faith in action.

Pray today:

• For the people of Emmanuel College to obey God, regardless of where he sends us or what he asks us to do.
• For the leadership of the College to put faith into action, to hear the voice of the Lord and to obey.

Today's meditation:

• How often shall we pray in 2019? Without ceasing, of course. And how often shall we fast? As long as there are chains to break, oppression to dispel, evil to overcome.

Pray today:

• For much praying and fasting in 2019 for Emmanuel College - praying and fasting for more of our students to be committed to Christ, for more of them to lead a life of service, for more of them to be called to full-time Christian ministry.

• EC Serve trips for 2019 in the planning stages to Alaska, Appalachia, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Myanmar, and Panama.

Led by the Spirit

Consecrated to the Lord

When the time came for the purification rites required by the Law of Moses, Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, "Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord"). (Luke 2:22-23 NIV)

Today's meditation:

• One hundred years ago, Emmanuel College was birthed as Franklin Springs Institute and was consecrated to the Lord. Generations of students have been educated and inspired by hundreds of dedicated staff and faculty. Our students and graduates have contributed to the world through a myriad of careers and ministries. And today, with God's help, we continue.

Pray today:

• For the expansion of the mission and ministry of Emmanuel College in 2019, for greater effectiveness in teaching and mentoring our students, for increasing support and resources to meet the challenges of delivering Christian higher education in the 21st Century.

The Year of the Lord's Favor

"The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor." (Luke 4:19 NIV)

• For the ministries of Emmanuel College to be empowered by the Holy Spirit in the New Year, for us to be effective in reaching those who are bound, blind, and oppressed but do not know it, for us to successfully proclaim good news to those who rarely hear any.
• For 2019, the College's Centennial Year, to be a year when we, students and employees of Emmanuel College, both share and receive the Lord's favor.
